CROCHET CHART READING EXERCISES Original digital exercises, prepared 11 October 2026. Not yet made as physical swatches. No finished size or yarn quantity is specified. EXERCISE 1: SYMBOL DIAGRAM US terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet. Chain 7. Row 1: sc in second chain from hook, sc in each remaining chain (6 sc). Rows 2 and 3: ch 1, turn, sc in each of the 6 stitches (6 sc). The turning chain does not count as a stitch. Diagram direction: Row 1 right to left, Row 2 left to right, Row 3 right to left. One yarn color; diagram arrows do not instruct a color change. EXERCISE 2: SIGNAL FLAG COLOR GRID Flat turned rows, US single crochet. One cell = one stitch. A = oat; B = slate. Screen colors are examples, not yarn product codes. Fixed chart view: column 1 at the left, row 1 at the bottom. Right-edge start. Odd rows right to left; even rows left to right. All 80 cells are stitches, including the 64 A background cells and 16 B cells. For a physical trial: chain 11 in A; Row 1 works 10 sc, beginning in the second chain. Before each subsequent row, ch 1 and turn; ch 1 is not counted. Use the stated colorwork method consistently; this is not a complete tapestry lesson. COLOR GRID, TOP ROW FIRST; EACH LINE IS SHOWN LEFT TO RIGHT Row 8: AAAAAAAAAA Row 7: AABAAAAAAA Row 6: AABBBBAAAA Row 5: AABBBBBAAA Row 4: AABBBBAAAA Row 3: AABAAAAAAA Row 2: AABAAAAAAA Row 1: AAAAAAAAAA ROW RUNS IN ACTUAL WORKING ORDER Row 1 (right to left): 10A = 10 stitches Row 2 (left to right): 2A · 1B · 7A = 10 stitches Row 3 (right to left): 7A · 1B · 2A = 10 stitches Row 4 (left to right): 2A · 4B · 4A = 10 stitches Row 5 (right to left): 3A · 5B · 2A = 10 stitches Row 6 (left to right): 2A · 4B · 4A = 10 stitches Row 7 (right to left): 7A · 1B · 2A = 10 stitches Row 8 (left to right): 10A = 10 stitches ERROR CHECK For Row 4, reading the chart from the wrong end gives 4A, 4B, 2A. That still totals 10 stitches, but places B in columns 5-8 instead of 3-6. Count, direction and position must all agree.
